The housing stock changes depending on which side of Sydney Road you’re on. East of Sydney Road toward Lygon Street, it’s denser — Victorian terraces on smaller lots, share houses packed three or four deep, and newer apartment blocks replacing old industrial sites like the Holeproof factory on Dods Street. West of Sydney Road toward the railway line, the blocks open up a bit with more Edwardian homes, but the streets between Sydney Road and the rail corridor are narrow. Several newer developments near the stations have been built without car parking by design — buildings like Nightingale Anstey near Anstey station have shared rooftop laundry instead of in-unit machines. That’s a lot of residents who need laundry done and don’t have a car to drive it somewhere.

Sydney Road is not a place we stop — trams, congestion, and time-restricted parking make it impractical. We come in from the residential side streets instead. Parking on the quieter blocks between Sydney Road and Lygon Street is usually fine mid-morning through to mid-afternoon. The Upfield line level crossing removal project is a major construction zone right now — the elevated rail bridge between Albion Street and Park Street is disrupting access on some cross-streets, and that’ll continue until around 2030.
