The Pentridge redevelopment has transformed Coburg’s density. The former prison site between Sydney Road and Champ Street now holds somewhere between 800 and 1,000 apartments across multiple towers up to 19 storeys, behind the original bluestone walls. That’s a huge concentration of residents in a suburb that was previously California bungalows and interwar brick homes on standard blocks. Away from Pentridge, the traditional housing remains: The Grove is still Coburg’s best residential street with large period homes, and the side streets off Sydney Road have a mix of weatherboard, brick veneer, and an increasing number of townhouse subdivisions. East of Sydney Road near Elizabeth Street, the Coburg Hill estate on the former Kodak site has added contemporary homes for about 1,000 people.

Sydney Road is the same story as Brunswick — trams, congestion, clearways — so we come in from the side streets. The Upfield line level crossings through Coburg have been removed with elevated rail, so east-west access across the suburb is better than it used to be. Residential streets off Sydney Road are mostly unrestricted, though parking is tightening as more homes get subdivided into townhouses. We already collect from the townhouses around the Pentridge precinct — straightforward front-door access.
