Fawkner is one of the most multicultural suburbs we service — only about a third of residents speak English at home. The established Italian families who built here in the 1950s and 60s are still a big presence, particularly in the older brick veneer homes on streets like Jukes Road, Major Road, and Argyle Street. Alongside them, a large Pakistani community has grown over the last two decades, plus Lebanese, Indian, and Nepalese residents. Most of the housing is postwar brick veneer on generous blocks — three bedrooms, front yard, driveway, concrete tile roof. The Moomba Park pocket around Anderson Road in the north has slightly bigger lots from a 1960 estate. Developers are starting to subdivide, replacing single houses with two or three townhouses per block, but it’s still overwhelmingly freestanding homes. About two-thirds of residents own their home outright or with a mortgage.

Fawkner is essentially a dead-end suburb — Merri Creek blocks the east, the railway line runs along the west, and the M80 closes the north. That means almost no through-traffic on the residential streets, which makes kerbside stops easy. The other thing to know is that Fawkner Memorial Park takes up roughly a quarter of the suburb’s total area in the southwest corner, so there’s a large block of land with no residential addresses. The residential streets themselves are flat, wide, and grid-pattern with plenty of kerb space. Some of the established homes have rendered facades with locked front gates — if you’re behind a locked gate, include a note about access when you book. The newer townhouses use shared driveways with unit numbering (1/48, 2/48 format), but they’re still ground-level front doors.
