Richmond’s residential streets are dominated by single-fronted Victorian weatherboard cottages — long, narrow houses that sit directly on the street with minimal setback. The heritage streets between Punt Road and Church Street — Docker, Tanner, Waltham, Wangaratta — are tightly packed with these cottages, many now share houses with several people running one compact machine. Richmond Hill east of Church Street has larger Victorian homes on streets like Goodwood and Richmond Terrace. North Richmond around the Elizabeth Street public housing estate has a different character entirely — four 20-storey towers and a strongly multicultural community, particularly Vietnamese and East Timorese residents around Victoria Street. Between the share houses, the compact cottages without modern laundry setups, and the apartment residents, Richmond has consistent laundry demand across every pocket.

Richmond is one of the trickier suburbs for a delivery driver. Many of the narrow Victorian-era streets between the main roads are one-way — particularly in the Clifton Village grid between Church Street and Wangaratta Street. Four tram routes cross the suburb: Route 70 on Swan Street, Route 109 on Victoria Street, Route 78 on Church Street, and Routes 48 and 75 on Bridge Road. All of them have peak-hour clearways, so stopping on any of those streets during morning or afternoon rush is not an option. Side streets have permit-restricted parking — usually two-hour limits with resident exemptions. The Victorian cottages have the simplest access — front door right on the street, often with a rear laneway as well. Apartment buildings along Victoria Street and the newer developments near Cremorne have intercom entry. We’re generally in and out quickly on the residential streets, but timing matters — late morning is the sweet spot.
