Thornbury’s housing stock is mainly Edwardian and California bungalow — the suburb built out in the 1920s after the tram and train arrived, so it’s a generation newer than Northcote and Fitzroy. The bungalows have broad front verandahs and decent-sized blocks. The townhouse infill is changing the character though — streets like Strettle, Mansfield, Collins, and Pender are seeing older homes replaced with three or four townhouses per block, and those townhouses often have compact European machines that can’t keep up with a family’s weekly load. West of High Street toward St Georges Road, the housing is more heritage-protected with better-preserved Federation homes. East of High Street toward Darebin Creek, there’s more variety including some post-war brick veneer.

Thornbury is one of the easiest suburbs in our network for pickups. The streets are wider than in Northcote or Fitzroy — later subdivision means more generous road widths — and most residential streets are still unrestricted for parking. High Street has tram 86 so we don’t stop there, but the side streets either side are straightforward. The bungalows and period homes all have direct front-door access with verandahs. For the newer townhouses, the front units have their own street entry, but rear units are accessed via a common driveway — just let us know which unit number and we’ll find it.
