The residential core of Brunswick West is interwar Californian bungalows — single-storey weatherboard and brick on blocks bigger than neighbouring Brunswick. Streets like Everett, Wales, Henderson, and Hope are quiet and wide with front garden access. The Dawson Street pocket (Dawson, Daly, Halpin, Pearson) is the most intact heritage area, with 1920s–30s bungalows and bluestone rear laneways. Along Melville Road and Grantham Street where the trams run, the character changes — 1960s and 70s walk-up flat blocks went up when old bungalow lots were subdivided. Nearly half the suburb rents, and the flat dwellers are a big part of that. The Harvest Square development at Kitchener Street and Gronn Place has replaced the old public housing estate with around 200 new dwellings — a mix of social housing, community housing, and private apartments and townhouses — all with intercom entry.

The residential side streets are the easy part — wide, quiet, with unrestricted parking through the middle of the suburb. Melville Road is the opposite: tram in mixed traffic, no-stopping zones, and limited kerbside space. Grantham Street is the same story. Most pickups from the older bungalows are straightforward front-door access through a garden path. The walk-up flats on Melville Road often have shared stairwells with no intercom — you can usually walk up to the door. Newer buildings like Harvest Square and the Hopetoun Apartments on Hopetoun Avenue have secure entry with intercom and basement parking, so include your building name and buzzer details when you book.
