St Kilda East is 70% apartments — mainly 1960s cream-brick walk-up blocks on almost every street. These are 2–3 storey buildings with one- and two-bedroom units, most without in-unit laundry. Heritage cottage pockets survive in between — Godfrey Avenue has well-preserved Edwardian cottages, Camden Street has rows of Victorian timber workers’ cottages, and the Chusan Street precinct near Hotham Street has the most intact 1880s working-class housing. Alma Road is a mix of grand Victorian terraces (many subdivided into flats) and newer developments. Over half the suburb rents, and nearly a fifth of households don’t own a car at all.

The 1960s walk-ups here follow the same pattern as neighbouring Balaclava — no intercom, no lift, no secure lobby. Entry is from the street via a common ground-level doorway and internal stairs. We liaise directly with residents to coordinate — either meet us at the entrance or let us know a safe place to leave the bag. The heritage cottage streets are easy — front doors with low fences, short paths. Street parking is permit-controlled throughout, and the 1960s blocks rarely have dedicated parking so residents compete for kerb space. Carlisle Street on the western edge has trams and commercial parking restrictions. Alma Road carries heavy traffic but the side streets off it are quiet. Overall, St Kilda East is a simpler pickup suburb than St Kilda proper — no backpacker hostels, no nightclub crowds, just residential streets.
