Windsor is one of Melbourne’s most renter-heavy suburbs — roughly two-thirds of residents rent, and nearly 60% of dwellings are flats or apartments. East of Chapel Street, the grid of tight side streets is dominated by single-fronted Victorian terraces on McIlwrick, Duke, Frederick, and Hornby Streets. Many of these terraces have no off-street parking and no laundry space beyond a compact machine wedged under a staircase. West of Chapel, the housing shifts to apartment blocks — Raleigh Street mixes 1960s walk-ups with newer developments. The southern end near Dandenong Road is younger, more transient, and more apartment-dense. The northern end near High Street feels more established and blends into Prahran. Customers here are typically from the terrace houses.

Parking is tight everywhere in Windsor. Chapel Street has tram 78 running along it with metered parking — not viable for stopping. The terrace streets east of Chapel are narrow with cars on both sides and no driveways, but the front doors open right to the footpath so pickups are quick — in and out. West of Chapel, the older walk-up blocks have shared entrance vestibules with buzzers but no lifts and no concierge. Newer buildings near the station have intercom and security fob access. Best approach is via Williams Road from the east or Punt Road from the west rather than through Chapel Street. If you’re in a terrace east of Chapel, just leave your bag at the front door — these streets are quick stops.
