Heidelberg has a split character. Near Burgundy Street and the station, mid-rise apartments have changed the skyline — Forty Burgundy at number 40 is 10 storeys, Heidi Apartments at 112–120 Burgundy Street is another 10, and buildings on Darebin Street, Cape Street, Hawdon Street, and Rosanna Road have added hundreds of dwellings in recent years. These are mostly one and two-bedroom apartments rented by young professionals, many working at the Austin Hospital just up the road. Move 400 metres from the station and the suburb reverts to traditional detached houses — brick veneer and weatherboard on generous blocks along Brown Street, Anderson Street, Bronte Street, and the quieter residential courts. Original homes are being progressively replaced by two or three townhouses per lot, but the overall character is still family homes with driveways and front gardens.

The apartment core around Burgundy Street is genuinely difficult to park in during business hours — council data shows 94–100% kerbside occupancy on Cape Street, Darebin Street, and Martin Street at midday on weekdays. We schedule Heidelberg core pickups early morning or evening when possible. The residential streets further out have about 27% occupancy at peak — completely different story. The newer apartment buildings all have intercom and swipe card entry with secure underground parking, so include your building name and buzzer details when booking. Older 1970s walk-up blocks on Hawdon Street have simpler access — external stairs, no intercom. Townhouses have individual front doors from shared driveways. The freestanding homes on quieter streets are standard front-door pickups with easy kerbside parking.
