Essendon is big — the largest suburb in Moonee Valley — and the housing changes depending on where you are. The eastern end near Essendon station and Windy Hill has fine Victorian and Federation homes along Rose Street, Raleigh Street, and Fletcher Street. The central area around Mar Lodge is classic 1920s California Bungalows with wide frontages. Further west towards Hoffmans Road, the stock shifts to 1950s brick veneer on quieter streets. Near the station, apartment development has picked up significantly — buildings on Russell Street, Rose Street, and Mt Alexander Road reach up to nine storeys. Keilor Road carries the Route 59 tram down the centre, so parking along the strip is competitive during shop hours. Mt Alexander Road is similar.
