Essendon North is one of the smallest suburbs in Moonee Valley — about 3,000 people. The original housing is 1920s and 30s California Bungalows along streets like Kerferd and Orange Grove, with post-war brick homes filling in around them. Contemporary townhouses are appearing near the Keilor Road end, but the suburb remains overwhelmingly freestanding houses. What makes it distinctive is the Tullamarine Freeway, which cut through the northern ends of many streets when it was built — creating dead ends and cul-de-sacs that eliminate through-traffic and keep the suburb exceptionally quiet.

The dead-end street layout is the one thing to know about pickups here. Most streets do not connect through, so drivers plan the route in advance rather than cutting across — though with GPS it’s a non-event. Once you are on the right street, access is easy — wide roads, ample parking, driveways on every property, and very little traffic. Near Keilor Road there are a few newer apartment and townhouse developments with individual front entries. The rest of the suburb is standard front-door access with clear front paths.
