Thomastown is where the northern suburbs stop feeling anything like the inner city. There are no Victorian terraces or Edwardian cottages — just uniform 1970s and 80s brick veneer on wide streets with big front setbacks. The blocks are generous, most homes have three bedrooms, and a lot of owners have rendered and painted the original brick for a more modern look. The suburb has one of the strongest multicultural characters on our route — Italian and Macedonian families are the two largest established communities, with Greek, Vietnamese, Arabic-speaking, and growing Indian populations alongside them. About a fifth of residents are over 65, many of them long-term homeowners. The southern portion of the suburb is industrial — warehouses and factories between Mahoneys Road and the M80 — so the residential pickups are all in the north and centre.

There are two distinct street layouts here. East Thomastown, east of the railway line and High Street, has a straightforward grid — Dalton Road, Rowen Street, Temple Drive — easy to navigate. West Thomastown has curving courts and crescents designed to prevent through-traffic — Victoria Drive, Juniper Crescent, Kingsway Drive — which can be confusing the first time through but fine with GPS. Street parking is easy everywhere, with wide roads and most homes having their own driveways and garages. This is the furthest north we regularly pick up, so turnaround times are a bit longer than our closer suburbs. The villa units from the 1980s and 90s — typically four to eight dwellings around shared driveways — are common throughout and use standard unit numbering.
