Hawthorn East splits at Riversdale Road. North of Riversdale, the housing is Victorian and Edwardian — polychromatic brick homes built with the locally made Hawthorn bricks in distinctive pinks and browns. Victoria Road is one of the suburb’s best residential streets, with wide median plantings and grand Italianate mansions. South of Riversdale, the housing is a generation newer — interwar California bungalows and brick homes built in the 1920s and 30s when cars were already common, so more of these homes have driveways and garages. About 45% of Hawthorn East’s dwellings are apartments, concentrated along Toorak Road where mid-rise developments have filled the corridor, and near Auburn station.

Toorak Road carries tram 75 with clearway restrictions — not a place to stop. Burke Road on the eastern edge has tram 72. Riversdale Road has trams 70 and 75. So the three main arterials are all tram routes, and we work from the residential streets between them. Northern Hawthorn East’s Victorian-era streets are narrower and homes often lack off-street parking — but the wide Victoria Road precinct is an exception with generous kerbside space. Southern streets with interwar homes and driveways are generally easier. The Toorak Road apartment buildings use intercom entry — include your building name and access details when booking. The period homes have standard front-door access, and many in the Victoria Road precinct also have rear laneway access via heritage bluestone lanes.
