Fitzroy North is the residential calm behind Fitzroy’s commercial noise. Over half the housing stock is Victorian-era terraces and about 70% predates 1915 — it’s one of the most intact heritage streetscapes in the inner north. Alfred Crescent curves around Edinburgh Gardens with imposing double-storey villas, while streets like Best, Rae, and Birkenhead have more modest single-fronted cottages and terraces. The suburb was originally surveyed with wide, tree-lined streets — a noticeable contrast to the narrow blocks in Fitzroy proper. Apartments are a smaller share here, concentrated along St Georges Road and at the Queens Parade end. Most of the terraces have their own laundry, but the machines are usually compact — fitted into a converted cupboard or lean-to at the back of the house.

This is one of the most straightforward suburbs on our route for access. The wide streets mean parking is easier than in Fitzroy or Collingwood, and most residential blocks have either unrestricted parking or 2-hour limits with resident exemptions. The terraces have direct front-door access — small front garden, verandah, doorbell. Many also have side gates and rear laneway access if needed. The main thing to watch is Edinburgh Gardens on warm weekends — parking around Alfred Crescent and Freeman Street fills up when the park gets busy. Avoid St Georges Road and Nicholson Street for stopping because of the trams, but one block in either direction and you’re fine.
